The Elective Collective: Political Agency in Graphic Design

In 2017 as part of a group project the class of third-year design students at the Ilam School of Fine Arts created an identity known as The Elective Collective. This was a temporary space formed with the intention of exploring the political agency graphic design has within New Zealand. The website was structured with two wings, the first wing had a series of design ephemera the class had selected and contextualized, representing the history of political design in New Zealand. The second wing was set up to receive new material designed specifically for the present context, which was the time was just before the 2017 elections. The website received over 30 contributions and was active for 6 months.
